The measure passed by 88.2%  Now the state must pass a law allowing the county to make this change.

Here’s the question voters had to say yes or no to: Shall Articles III, IV, and V of the Jackson County Charter, adopted by vote on November 3, 1970, and as amended by public votes on August 8, 1978, April 2, 1985, November 4, 1986, August 2, 1994, August 3, 2010, and November 6, 2018 be amended to require that the Charter Office of the Jackson County Assessor no longer be a qualified appointee and instead be an elected position?

At one time, a thousand troups a day died in our war with Vietnam. That doesn’t count those who came home missing limbs, damaged bodies, and the emotional impact they still carry with them. In 2022, the most recent year for which data are available, the age-adjusted suicide rate for U.S. veterans was 34.7 per 100,000, which is significantly higher than the rate of 17.1 per 100,000 for non-veteran adults. On average, 17.6 veterans died by suicide every day that year. The families of veterans suffer from their losses and in addition, the separation during their tour of duty affects wives, girlfriends, and the children as well. Without our veterans today, we would be Germans, Japanese, or some other nationality that would have invaded us.

Drug overdose is the leading cause of death for young adults in Missouri — and 70% of those deaths involve opioids.¹ In the last two decades, the United States has seen an unprecedented increase in opioid use, addiction, and overdose deaths. For Missouri, the number of non-heroin opioid overdose deaths nearly tripled between 2016 and 2021.² More recently, there’s been a sharp increase in overdose deaths involving a synthetic opioid called fentanyl. Because it can be made cheaply, fentanyl is often used during the manufacturing of other illicit drugs (including knockoff prescription pills) to increase their potency. A tiny amount of fentanyl can be fatal. The best way to stay safe is to stay informed! Read on to learn what the overdose crisis looks like in Jackson County + what resources are available to help.

95TH STREET (Banister) is now open. Vrom Emanuel Cleaver, II Member of Congress 5th district of mo Representative Hello Neighbor, Right now, 42 million Americans are at risk of losing their November SNAP benefits because the Trump administration has not used funds that are legally available. Let me be clear about what's happening: The administration has both the funds and the legal authority to fully fund SNAP benefits in November, which the Trump administration proved during the government shutdown of 2018-2019. The SNAP contingency fund exists for exactly this purpose, and Secretary Rollins has the transfer authority to ensure full benefits go out. But the Department of Agriculture is choosing not to do it. SNAP provides critical food assistance to some of our most vulnerable neighbors: 16 million children (39 percent of all beneficiaries) 8 million seniors aged 60+ (20 percent of all beneficiaries) 4 million people with disabilities (10 percent of all beneficiaries) 1.2 million veterans (3 percent of all beneficiaries) In Missouri's Fifth Congressional District, more than 33,000 people rely on SNAP each month. These are our neighbors, our family members, and members of our community who are working hard but need support to put food on the table. Strengthening food assistance programs has been a priority for me, which is why I fought to secure $850,000 in federal funding for Harvesters Community Food Network, a regional food bank serving 27 counties in western Missouri and northeastern Kansas. Additionally, I recently joined more than 200 lawmakers in the House of Representatives to urge the administration to take immediate action to ensure SNAP benefits would continue in the weeks ahead. Moreover, I cosponsored legislation that would ensure SNAP benefits remain available during any government shutdown. As I continue pushing for a bipartisan budget that will reopen government, lower health care costs, and ensure families receive the benefits they are entitled to, my office is open and doing everything possible to provide assistance to those in need. If you are in need of assistance with SNAP or any other federal benefit, please don't hesitate to reach out to my office at 816-842-4545 or by email here. Sincerely,  Emanuel Cleaver, II Member of Congress

As of October 24, 2025, due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, Missouri WIC recipients are expected to receive their benefits for November. Unlike the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the WIC program typically has contingency funds that allow it to continue running for a limited time during a shutdown.

Lingering Impressions

by Pete Williams

I stayed out of school for one year after graduating from High School. I wanted to go to a Christian College in Bolivar, MO. The cost was $600 for the full year of two semesters. That fee included room and board. The room had three bunk beds as I had to share with two others. The fee included three meals a day, except for Sunday, when we did not have an evening meal. We sat at long tables and were served complete meals. These were delicious meals just like I would have received at home. I was the only one on campus who had a car. No girls were allowed in the boys' dorm, and no boys were allowed in the girls' dorm. I think the girls' curfew was around 8 or 9 PM. That included weekends. I will never forget the shared experiences of that year in college.

A Missouri citizens group called People Not Politicians is using a referendum petition to challenge new congressional maps approved by the state legislature. The group argues the new districts were illegally gerrymandered for partisan advantage.

 Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe signed into law the recent redistricting proposal One of the most contentious aspects of the new map is the splitting of the heavily Democratic Kansas City area into three separate, Republican-leaning districts. This move has raised concerns about gerrymandering and the manipulation of district boundaries for political gain. By splitting the Kansas City area into multiple Republican-leaning districts, the plan could dilute the voting power of Democratic voters in the region and potentially disenfranchise certain communities. This could result in less diverse representation and limited political competition in these districts. Unless overturned by a judge. this redistricting will leave Raytown in the fifth district. We will now be in a new district that loses much of the KC population and wil now extend to, but not including  Columbia MO. The goal of the :REpublicans is to make the fifth district a Republican district and thereby gaining one more House seat that is Republican rather than Democrat.

From the Mo Department 0f Social Services

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Due to the ongoing federal shutdown, Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) has informed all state agencies to temporarily suspend the issuance of SNAP benefits for November 2025 as they are 100% federally funded. As a result, DSS will not be able to distribute November SNAP benefits until further notice from FNS.

The government is still shut down. The most recent government shutdown occurred from December 22, 2018,.The shutdown was primarily triggered by a disagreement between President Donald Trump and Congress over funding for a border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. President Trump demanded $5.7 billion for the construction of the wall, while Democrats opposed the funding, leading to a budget impasse. The main stumbling block is continued funding for the Affordable Care Act, also called Obamacare, which is popular with voters and enables low-income people to access healthcare. The shutdown had a significant impact on government operations and services, with around 800,000 federal employees being furloughed or working without pay. This resulted in the closure of national parks, delays in tax refunds, and disruptions in various government agencies such as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Expect some government services to cease.

Phil LeVota as the new interim county executive. LeVota's appointment was confirmed by a 5-4 vote of the legislature on October 13, 2025, following interviews with nine candidates.

The Jackson County legislature will choose someone to finish out the term who will not be allowed to run for the office Oct 2, 2025 Former Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes will be the temporary Jackson County executive, according to an overnight post from legislator Jalen Anderson. Oct 1, 2025 Jackson County Executive Frank White Jr. removed from office by a public vote of 85 to 15..

From Congressman Emanuel Cleaver;

Lowering Health Care Premiums ;

Hello Neighbor, Americans are starting to receive notices that their health care premiums are going up next year. Why? Because the Affordable Care Act enhanced premium tax credits are set to expire soon if Congress fails to act. Unfortunately, while I’m in Washington fighting to extend these tax credits and reopen the federal government, Speaker Johnson has canceled votes and extended the U.S. House of Representatives’ vacation into its fourth week, bringing us closer to a health care crisis. Without action, 46,000 constituents across Missouri’s Fifth Congressional District will be forced to pay up to twice as much for their health care premiums. For example, a 60-year-old couple that earn $82,000 a year would see their premiums rise by $17,000 a year.
